Me today: Queen of Pentacles
Keywords: Nurturing, abundant, caring, grounded
The Queen of Pentacles embodies the energy of an earth mother. She feels the planet's rhythms and innately knows how to go with the energy flow around her. She’s grounded and present, watchful and calm. She looks after her body and tends to her health, reminding us to put ourselves first so we can care for the ones we love. As the Water of Earth, she makes the plants grow. She nurtures the planet as she nourishes herself, enjoying the physicality of life in all the ways you can imagine. She makes a Sunday roast and invites the neighbors over. She puts Band-Aids on her knees and money into college funds. She’s practical and abundant, wise and loving. The Queen of Pentacles teaches us how to give birth to the life we want. She reminds us to attend doctor’s appointments and drink more water. I see this Queen hanging out with the Empress as they embody nurturing motherly energy, but while the Empress shares her bounty with the world, the ever-practical Queen of Pentacles ensures your fridge is full. She helps us remember to look after our physical needs and makes us eat our greens!
Crossing my path: Knight of Pentacles
Keywords: Dedicated, focused, dependable, reliable
If you need a job done well, the Knight of Pentacles is the Court member to ask. He’s organized, dedicated, and focused. He’ll make and execute the plan, and nothing will get in his way. It could be argued he’s the less exciting of the four Knights, but that also makes him the most reliable — and the one with the healthiest bank balance! Pursuing practicality and abundance means he’s not afraid of doing the work. He keeps his attention on HOW to do something, not why he’s doing it. He teaches us to keep moving forward with plans and not let future trips get in the way. When we channel the energy of the Knight of Pentacles, we realize our dreams in solid and tangible ways. We make the phone calls and have the meetings. We manifest the funding we need and practice the speech until we get it right. We take full responsibility for our future happiness.
Guidance: Temperance
Possible keywords: Moderation, emotional calm, harmony, balance, tolerance
After the polarity in the Lovers card, we find another variation in Temperance. The word comes from the Latin temperate, meaning “to mix” — it’s moving in with your lover, fusing two individual lives to make something new. It’s the middle road, the third option, the synthesis of two ideologies embodying yin and yang. Balance as a concept appears often in the tarot — here, we’re being advised to keep our heads and seek emotional balance. Temperance could be viewed as “everything in moderation,” that hackneyed old phrase that sounds boring initially but might be the key to surviving this crazy ride. There’s a reason Temperance sits between Death and the Devil: Temperance is calming, soothing, and a balm for what ails us. Ask yourself: where am I out of balance here? How could some moderation help this situation?
