The Devil
Possible keywords: Exhilaration, mischief, intoxication, temptation
As an archetype, the Devil represents temptation and our very human inclination to do stuff that’s bad for us. He’s that extra glass of wine the night before a big meeting and the entire chocolate cake when you only wanted a slice. When in shadow, the Devil represents our indulgences and vices, yes indeed, but he’s also a reminder that we need to let our hair down once in a while. If we keep ourselves so tightly wound, denying ourselves any pleasures, we’ll inevitably unravel when we loosen our grip. In many ways, The Devil is yet another card about balance. He’ll show up when you need to let some steam out of the pressure cooker! He may also show his face when your limits are being tested. We may be choosing to ignore what’s right in front of us. We can make better decisions — no evil thing is out there, making us do what we do. By taking responsibility for our actions, we can enjoy the pleasures of life without destroying ourselves in the process.
