If the Four of Swords is the sacred alone card, a reminder to do something to return to my center, the Hermit card is the absolute embodiment of that. It’s the holy solitude card. Solitude is richer and more profound than just being alone. The Hermit travels within to contemplate the complexities of life, taking himself away from the outside world so he can hear the whispers of his soul. He is a channel of the divine, a philosopher, and a teacher. When ready, he will return to the world and share his light with his students. In many ways, he’s the counterpart to the Hierophant — both are teachers, but the Hermit shares wisdom uncovered through his direct experience. The Hermit comes to us when it’s time to honor the need to retreat. When the loudness of the world drowns out your sense of what’s true, it’s time to go within. This is not a period of loneliness, though, as the Hermit is no longer in his cave — he’s further ahead, illuminating the way for the rest of us. Whatever is happening right now, the Hermit counsels you to take yourself away to uncover the truth about the situation. Return when you have found the illumination you need.
